Position Location: Remote -- Richmond VA

 

Position Summary:  The Community Organizer works closely with the Virginia Staff Organizing team and volunteers/members to grow a diverse and powerful movement of mothers that develop and implement local and state campaigns to sway elected and business leaders to work aggressively for a swift, complete, and just transition off fossil fuels to renewable energy.  Specifically, the Community Organizer works with members to 1) organize and engage new members and 2) initiate and support member-led teams in diverse communities throughout the state that help carry out the local and statewide Mothers Out Front campaigns. 3) Connect local and statewide Mothers Out Front campaigns to national Mothers Out Front movement work across states.

Responsibilities:

Start Member Led Local Organizing Teams

  • Initiate outreach and build relationships with mothers and community members in communities across the state with the goal of starting new community organizing teams.

  • Coach members to set and meet goals to engage new people and to turn people-power into individual, community, and state level action toward larger campaign goals.

  • Coach members to recruit supporters, build member leadership, and activate strategy.

  • Support member engagement activities, Data, and Events team in coordination with the local MOF teams and state MOF leadership team.

  • Develop relationships with a diverse array of allied organizations and community leaders across issues (i.e. beyond the environmental field, and constituents, (i.e. youth, communities of color)

 

Coordinate Data Collection and Tracking (i.e. numbers of: people engaged, volunteers, members, house parties and other events; potential members’ interests and area of expertise and other relevant data to measure our progress and effectiveness)

  • Serve as Data Coordinator until a new community team has a Data Coordinator.

  • Identify and train Data Coordinators in new communities.

  • Track and ensure that all state data is entered into NationBuilder and is effectively being used by Community Organizing Teams.

  • Work with the Organizing Director and the Lead Organizer to start, engage, coach and support national volunteer data team in coordination with other state organizers which will:

    • Streamline data collection processes from volunteers

    • Train new community-based data coordinators and existing data coordinators on NationBuilder data management software and evolving data collection processes

    • Ensure that volunteer/member data coordinators are trained and up-to-date with metrics and data entry and reporting procedures.  This requires working closely with other state organizers, facilitating participation by data coordinator volunteers in national data coordinator meetings & trainings, and conducting training/skills refreshers of data coordinators consistent with national processes and priorities.

 

Support Member Engagement System Volunteers/Members:

  • Coordinate events as needed, especially in new communities, providing materials and supporting volunteers with logistics.

  • Support the Volunteer House Party Team by coaching in the following areas:

    • Coordination of house parties organizing and facilitation, including communicating the schedule and enlisting volunteers to serve as facilitators.

    • Work with volunteer leaders to maintain and distribute house party kit and materials.

    • Help streamline house party process and update best ways to collect data

    • Check-in with house party coordinators after house parties to ensure data from house parties gets entered into NationBuilder.

    • Input/upload house party attendees information in communities without assigned data coordinators and provide reports to staff and volunteers on a regular basis.

    • Track event attendees, connect new members to community teams when appropriate.

 

Coordinate Events:

  • Support Organizers in starting and coordinating a statewide leadership team that would design and coordinate large meeting (such as trainings, rallies, strategy summits) logistics -- including space, food, printed materials and audio-visual tools.

  • Coordinate planning meetings to discuss event logistics.

  • Provide direct staff support to larger events, includes reserving space, acquiring permits, coordinating payment to vendors.

  • Develop and maintain list of rentable or donated meeting spaces and act as main contact for reserving meeting spaces.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing

  • Demonstrated understanding of climate justice & environmental justice issues

  • Commitment to fighting climate change

  • Passion for developing the leadership of mothers

  • Highly creative, flexible and motivated to foster the creation of member-led teams

  • Racial Justice competencies and commitment to anti oppression work. Demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and generational backgrounds

  • Ability to succeed in a changing, fast-paced environment, to plan and prioritize effectively, to manage multiple projects, and to meet competing demands and deadlines.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • High level of professionalism.

  • Capacity to “roll up your sleeves” in a startup nonprofit organization.

  • Demonstrated intermediate experience with database software used for fundraising, organizing, or something similar and standard office software

  • Demonstrated project management experience

  • Ability to work independently and as team player

  • Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings

  • Ability to travel regularly throughout the state

  • Experience working with volunteers and planning events.

  • Excitement about continuous learning

  • Experience using Nationbuilder a plus.
